The history of wine in the family, and in Albufeira, dates back to 1875. Quinta do Canhoto was the last property to enter the family collection, in 1958, by Antonio da Libânia, grandfather of Josefina Fernandes and Edgar Vilarinho, the two brothers who currently manage the Quinta.
It currently has 22 hectares, 11 of which are vineyards, and is located on the doorstep of the city of Albufeira.
Quinta do Canhoto has always had vineyards planted on its soil, as well as carob, olive, almond and fig trees, many of the trees are now centuries old.

In a small family winery, wine was made for family and friends. António da Libânia, the grandfather, being a widower and living alone, had the philosophy of not selling wine. He said, ‘Do you want to buy the wine so you can have a party in your houses and I can stay here alone? No. You like the wine, so drink it here at home with me.’ This is the genesis of wine tourism, although there was no name for it at the time. Tradition and knowledge have been passed down from generation to generation, that of caring for the vineyards, that of making wine, as well as the pleasure of welcoming visitors. For decades they maintained their direct grape sales activity, as well as to the Adega Cooperativa de Lagoa. The grape varieties they produced were negra mole, crato branco and periquita.
The siblings, Josefina, with a degree in Agriculture and Oenology, and Edgar, with field experience, have always honoured the family heirlooms and also the business. With businesses in the tourism sector, they never stopped working in the vineyards, selling the grapes to the Adega Cooperativa de Lagoa and to other wineries in the region, which had a tradition of making their own wines.
In 2007, with the need to restructure the vineyard and with extensive experience in tourism, they decided to make a profound change in the wine business, and since that year they have been planning an ambitious winery and wine tourism project at Quinta do Canhoto.
